The National Association of Realtors: Taking Action on Deceptive Lending Practices

Friday, August 17th, 2007

You would have to be completely “unplugged” from every conceivable outlet of 21st century media to miss the fact that the home lending industry is going through a serious crisis nationwide. The stock market has lost upwards of 1,000 points over “liquidity concerns” and over 120 mortgage lenders have shut their doors. A significant component of the lending drama concerns the issue of abusive lending practices in the “subprime” mortgage market. The National Association of Realtors® recently sent a letter to the Federal Reserve System Board of Governors that specifically addressed ongoing NAR efforts to combat unfair, deceptive and abusive mortgage lending acts and practices. In the words of the NAR, “The Fed must act responsibly to protect consumers, and NAR pledges its support. We champion the principle that all mortgage originators should act in ‘good faith and with fair dealings’ in all transactions, just as Realtors® are required by NAR’s Code of Ethics to treat all parties in the transaction honestly.” MS Las Vegas Real Estate salutes the NAR for pointing the spotlight on industry practices that result in borrowers getting trapped in abusive situations. We further agree with their position that existing lending guidelines are not enough to protect consumers as currently written. The guiding document as regards this issue is the (recently enhanced) NAR statement on Responsible Lending Principles.

Well, it’s about time! MTV opens a new chapter in the wild and sexy history of the MTV Video Music Awards by bringing the show to Las Vegas. The very first VMA show was way back in 1984 (can you believe it?) and since then hot spots such as New York, Los Angeles and Miami have hosted the wildest awards show in the known universe. But it’s time to take it to the next level, which is what Las Vegas does best. The Palms Hotel and Resort will be “MTV Central” for the weekend of September 9th and we can’t think of a more appropriate place to go all the way. The VMA’s will air LIVE from The Pearl Theater at The Palms that Sunday evening with a show you just won’t believe. In fact, MTV is set to program a whole VMA weekend featuring not-to-be-missed events, appearances and sizzling performances culminating with the star-studded music extravaganza Sunday night. In addition, the show will ONLY air on September 9th in its original form. Hey, what happens between Vegas and MTV really will stay in Vegas! Justin Timberlake and Beyonce lead the list of nominees for the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards with seven apiece. Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable” was nominated for Video of the Year, along with Justin Timberlake’s “What Goes Around…Comes Around,” which featured actress Scarlett Johansson. The MS Las Vegas Real Estate crew will be on hand for some hard-core partying. We promise to be back in the office Monday morning, but we might come in a little late!

Modern Masters: The Guggenheim Hermitage Museum at The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas

Friday, August 10th, 2007

There’s no denying it, it’s still a bit of a stretch for some people to identify Las Vegas, Nevada with world-class culture and the Arts. But the fact is, Las Vegas is a city in transformation and our cultural offerings continue to increase in both quantity and quality. An excellent example is the debut of the Modern Masters Collection from the prestigious Guggenheim collection that has just opened for viewing at the Venetian Hotel and Resort. On display until April 27th of next year, The Guggenheim Hermitage Museum (yes, it’s in Las Vegas) is featuring 37 masterpieces from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City that represent significant milestones in modern painting. The show is divided into four thematic sections – portraiture, landscape, still life and genre. Featured artists include Monet, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Chagall, Kandinsky and of course Pablo Picasso. At MS Las Vegas Real Estate, one of our most important jobs is to educate our clients about the revolutionary changes in what is already the most dynamic city in the world. It’s a pleasure to work and live in such an exciting metropolitan environment. Come see for yourself!

Go "Green" with Eco-Conscious Home Furnishings

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

Environmental awareness is sure to be one of the hallmarks of the first half of the 21st century. It seems that everywhere you look these days, someone is coming up with a new version of an old product that is “greener” in one way or another. Here’s something to seriously consider for your Las Vegas home, earth-conscious furniture. Every new trend has to have a catchy phrase and in the furniture business it’s “sustainable home furnishings”. Like most catch phrases, “sustainable” means different things to different people. Some furniture manufacturers are concentrating on the actual building process, seeking to do the job of creation and assemblage in a more energy efficient fashion. Others are more focused on the actual materials used to make the furniture, such as organics, recycled materials and bamboo. The World Market Center here in Las Vegas has recently partnered-up with the Sustainable Furniture Council to create The Living Green Pavilion, which will feature the finest in sustainable furnishings for upcoming trade shows. Much more than a fad or a fringe movement, environmentally responsible home furnishings are moving into the mainstream as consumer awareness/demand continues to grow. There can be no question that this is another earth-friendly step in the right direction.
