Howard Hughes bought the huge chunk of desert that is Summerlin today. His original intention was to put the manufacturing facilities of Hughes Aircraft out in the southern Nevada desert. He ended up changing his plans in part because he was worried about his employees spending all their money in the casinos! Summerlin was the maiden name of Howard Hughes’ mother and thus it was named. Today Summerlin is nationally recognized as one of the finest master-planned communities in the country.
