Two Great Festivals this Weekend in Las Vegas

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

One of the most popular annual festivals in the Summerlin master planned community takes place this weekend for the 17th year in a row. The Summerlin Arts Festival is ready once again to display its magic and beauty from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 24 and 25 at Summerlin Centre Community Park. Original artwork  from over 100 artisans and craftsmen of various disciplines will be on display and of course colorful “chalk art” creations will be the centerpiece of the festival as always. The Arts Festival will also include plenty of great food, live music, kids activities and performances from the Academy of Nevada Ballet Theatre and local professional dance studios.  Attendance is expected to top 10,000 this year and the event is free and open to the general public.

A true Mediterranean adventure awaits as the Las Vegas Greek Food Festival returns to Las Vegas for the 39th year  at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in the southwest section of the valley (5300 El Camino Road). This is a serious 3 day party event attended by over 30,000 people. The food is just amazing and the live music and traditional dancing could not be more authentic. The cooking starts almost two months in advance for this raucous event and all of it is done in the church kitchen if you can believe it. You can also shop for traditional Greek clothing and artwork. This festival is definitely high energy and full of Mediterranean old school charm and the people watching is some of the best you will ever experience. Admission is six dollars and kids under 12 are free. Come hungry because the food is to die for and the desserts are impossible to resist.

Plenty of Chances to Walk and Run in Las Vegas!

Friday, October 15th, 2010

Maybe it’s our weather, or the scenic beauty all across the Greater Las Vegas valley, because it seems as if there are terrific outdoor walking & running events in Southern Nevada at least once or twice a month. October is no exception to this rule and Las Vegas has two great 5K run-walk events scheduled for Saturday, October 16th that you should know about.

The first event we would like to draw your attention to will be held in the Mountain’s Edge homes community in the southwestern section of the Las Vegas valley. The purpose behind this 5K charity event is to draw attention to the dangers of cardiovascular disease and stroke, which claim about 5,000 lives every year in the state of Nevada alone. Pursuant to that goal, the American Heart Association is asking for donations and participation in  Start! Heart Walk and Run on Saturday, October 16th at 8 a.m. As you might expect, there will be additional activities throughout the morning including free health screenings, entertainment for the kids and great food of course!

The second event we would like to feature celebrates the 20th anniversary of one of the most outstanding residential master-planned living environments in the entire country, the Summerlin homes community. This 5K run is especially suited for early birds and starts at 6:30 a.m. if you can believe it! The Summerlin run & walk anniversary event is sponsored by the Summerlin community with additional support and great food from Agave Mexican Restaurant, which is where the non-competitive race will both begin and end. Continental breakfast will be served before the race and great tacos will be grilling afterwards. This is well worth getting up early for!

A Weekend of Food and Culture for Las Vegas

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

Las Vegas residents are enjoying two very popular fall festivals this weekend.  The 38th annual Greek Food Festival runs through Sunday evening at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church. Unless you have attended in previous years, it is hard to imagine how large and festive and delicious this festival really is. Upwards of 20,000 people are expected to attend over the course of three days, indulging in a raucous mix of live music, dancing and truly authentic Mediterranean cuisine. The theme of this year’s festival couldn’t be more appropriate … Honoring Our Military Troops and Their Families.

Not to be overshadowed or outdone is the Summerlin Art Festival at the Summerlin Centre Community Park on Town Center Drive. The Summerlin master-planned residential masterpiece is celebrating it’s 20th anniversary this year, which only adds to the offerings and activities planned. A personal favorite of mine is the stunningly beautiful chalk work done on the park sidewalks. You can’t imagine without seeing for yourself how elaborate, colorful and beautiful this “sidewalk art” really is. The Summerlin Arts Festival also features great food, live music and special performances by the Nevada Ballet Theater dancers. For the first time this year, the festival will be smoke free (even as an outdoor event) thanks to the Southern Nevada Health District.

The 2010 Summerlin Arts Festival

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

If you are familiar with Summerlin you know what a great time the Summerlin Art Festival is. If you’re not familiar with Summerlin and would like to experience just one of the things that makes Summerlin such a great Las Vegas Community, mark your calendars for September 25 and 26. There will be over 120 artists there displaying their creations, as well as professional and amateur artists literally painting the sidewalks with their temporary chalk masterpieces. Live music, roving entertainment and carving displays will add to the festive atmosphere. It’s free and open to the public, so bring your friends and family, enjoy the sights and sounds and talent, as well as the food and drink. Experience the fun and culture Summerlin real estate has to offer. And who knows, you may even find that perfect piece to decorate your Las Vegas home.
