Clark County Magnet High School - Canyon Springs
Canyon Springs High School features yet another outstanding Clark County Magnet Program that is specifically geared towards students with an aptitude for civic responsibility, politics, leadership and the law. Officially named the Canyon Springs Leadership and Law Preparatory Academy, this recently developed magnet program opened its doors to Clark County students for the 2004-2005 school year. The inaugural Leadership and Law class will be graduating in 2007.
The primary goal at the Leadership and Law Academy is to provide students with the skill sets and experience necessary to allow them to excel at the college level and beyond. The emphasis is clearly on future careers in government service, legal practice and corporate America. In today's world, it is not at all unusual for highly-skilled professionals to rotate through each of these arenas during the course of their careers. Canyon Springs Preparatory Academy embraces this reality and challenges students with a demanding curriculum that applies to all three.
Leadership and Law Academy students can expect to gain knowledge and skills relating to the law, the legal process, the legal system, and the fundamental principles and values on which these are based. But just as importantly, Academy students will have ample opportunity to put classroom knowledge to use as they develop 'real world' skills through a wide range of Academy specific opportunities. Examples include:
*A mock court room equipped with real time video teleconferencing/Internet for remote interaction
*Participation in mock trial competitions
*Application of the Socratic Method in specific instructional areas
*Internship programs in the legal, political and corporate community
*Partnerships with the State Bar of Nevada
*Partnerships with the UNLV William S. Boyd School of Law
Canyon Springs also offers a wide variety of athletic and extracurricular activities and these are viewed by administration and faculty as critical components in the overall magnet-study experience. Examples include football, basketball, cross country, golf, baseball and bowling. As you might imagine, student government is highly active, but extracurricular clubs also include activities such as art, drama and forensics.
